Adult Protective Services offered by DSHS Aging and Long-Term Support Administration's Home and Community Services Office
Investigates reports of vulnerable and dependent adults and adults with developmental disabilities who are abused, exploited, neglected or abandoned. Assesses risk and makes referrals to legal and medical resources. Services are voluntary.
Adult Protective Services (APS) investigates reports of abandonment, abuse, financial exploitation, neglect and self-neglect of vulnerable adults, and provides protective services to those residing in their own homes or in facilities. Services are voluntary and require client consent.
Services or referrals may include connecting individuals to other DSHS programs, assistance with locating medical care, long term care services, legal services and other community resources.
APS coordinates during investigations with other agencies such as law enforcement, mental health, prosecuting attorneys, case managers and medical professionals.

Maintains a complaint system which tracks complaints made against long-term care facilities and works with facility staff, local and state agencies to ensure that residents' complaints and concerns are listened to and responded to with appropriate action.
Educates the public about residents' rights, resident care, medical assistance, services/conditions in long-term care facilities and what to look for in a long-term care facility. Oversees local ombudsmen offices across the state. Recruits and trains volunteers as certified long-term care ombudsman and is staffed by professional ombudsmen.
