To accomplish this goal, Environmental Health Staff conduct the following activities:
- Licensing and periodic inspection of all public food establishments, including grocery stores, restaurants, bars and taverns, temporary food service events, mobile food units, catering businesses, and schools
- Reviews plans for construction of new food service establishments or the remodeling of existing establishments
- Investigates food-related complaints and food-borne illnesses
- Provides training and testing for food workers
- Coordinates with other public agencies at the state and federal level to insure safe and wholesome food is made available to the public
- Provides educational and technical advice to managers of food service establishments the public
Environmental Health Services offered at Environmental Public Health Division
Provides county inspections and permits.
Provides retail food service permits and inspection; temporary food service permits; surveillance over recreation shellfish and beach water quality; permits and inspections of solid waste and hazardous waste handling; consultation to private and public water supplies; insect and animal borne diseases; school, youth camp and permits. Permits and inspections of onsite septic systems.

Environmental Health is a branch of public health that focuses on prevention of disease in a community through direct intervention. This is done through inspections and enforcement of various state and local laws, all of which are designed to promote a healthier community.

Provides inspection and licensing of restaurants, safe food and water, sanitation, proper disposal of wastes and promoting safe and healthy environmental conditions.
Provides inspection and licensing of restaurants and other establishments serving food to the public. Plan, review, and approve small public water systems. Bacteriological water sample testing. Assistance with problems on private wells and community systems. License water system designers. Investigate all cases of environmentally spread communicable disease. Inspect public and semi-private swimming pools, hot tubs, and beaches. Inspect schools. License and inspect disposal sites. Monitor ground water and surface waters. Investigate animal bites for rabies control. Offer advice for eradication of rodents and insects. Investigate Lyme disease and Hantavirus.

Food Worker Class/Food Safety Program offered at Lewis County Public Health and Social Services
Provides health inspections and permits to temporary and permanent food establishments. Also provides food worker classes and cards to those who wish to work in food establishments. Classes are offered at the health department or online.

Food Service Inspections offered by Public Health in Seattle & King County's Environmental Health Services
Inspects food service establishments and responds to citizen complaints about unsafe food practices. Provides education to businesses on proper food handling and storage. Inspection records posted online.
Inspects public facilities such as schools and water recreation facilities (pools and spas). Plans, reviews and inspects certain commercial facilities (massage parlors, tattoo parlors and public bathhouses).
Provides routine inspection of food service establishments such as restaurants, grocery stores, taverns and ice cream vendors. Responds to citizens' complaints and has enforcement authority. Also inspects and certifies red meats, fish and poultry. Investigates consumer fraud through misrepresentation in product advertising, improper dating or pricing, etc.
