Responsible for the design, construction and maintenance of all county roads in Whatcom County.  In addition to roads, the Public Works Department maintains the county's buildings and grounds.

Engineering, street maintenance, water and sewer, and sanitation are four of the key areas the department plans and oversees. Regular operations include maintaining the wastewater treatment plant, maintaining sewers and water lines; striping, sweeping and maintaining streets for all weather conditions; maintaining street and traffic signs; and weed removal.

Provides oversite of city water, irrigation, streets, garbage, and parks. Wastewater Department focuses primarily on wastewater quality and treatment, sewer main maintenance, storm drainage, and river ecology.
