Programs that offer open-air learning experiences, particularly for schoolchildren, that promote appreciation for and understanding of local ecosystems and our fundamental connections to the world around us. Activities may include identification of plants, insects and animals and exploration of their habitats, learning about weather and its relationship to environmental processes, geological history and demonstrations of the importance of biodiversity and sustainability.  Students may investigate the life cycles of animals in a pond; observe the growth and reproduction of common plant species; examine the form and function of leaves, stems, roots and flowers and how these features help to classify plants; consider the interrelationship between predator and prey; learn how different animals grow and change with the seasons; learn and practice compass navigation and other outdoor skills; and/or make other discoveries which foster engaged and responsible environmental citizenship. Outdoor education programs may be provided through schools, conservation authorities or other organizations and depending on the program and the materials they incorporate, parents and/or caregivers may have a role to play in the process.

Outdoor Environmental Education

Institutions including science centers, discovery centers and science/technology museums that develop and maintain permanent and/or traveling educational exhibits which illustrate principles from mathematics and the physical sciences including physics, chemistry, astronomy, telecommunications and related fields or demonstrate technological advances in areas such as robotics or computer science. Exhibits may document specific achievements such as the exploration of space; illustrate a particular natural phenomenon such as the refraction of light; demonstrate inertia, momentum, friction and other basic principles of physics; explain the theory of probability; show specific examples of technological development such as the telephone or solar heating; or demonstrate new technologies such as the use of accelerators to explore the basic components or nature or laser light as a tool in applications ranging from medical science to national defense. Many of these museums provide special programs and interactive exhibits that are designed for children of different ages.

Summer Camps

Programs that provide creative recreational experiences in cooperative indoor and/or outdoor group living for children, usually age four to 13, or adults who are transported to the site each morning and who return to their homes at the end of each day. Transportation may be provided by the program or may be the responsibility of the family.
