Recreational Activities offered at Snohomish County Parks and Recreation

Programs that develop, maintain and make available to the public, enclosed off-leash recreational areas where dog owners can exercise their animals and allow them to play with one another. Amenities may include balls, tug toys and other playthings; seating for owners; supplies for disposing of waste; water dishes; and access to water. Separate enclosures may be provided for small, shy or older dogs or dogs with physical problems.

Dog Parks

Programs that develop, maintain and make available to the public, paths in forest, foothill and mountainous areas that are suitable for walking.

Hiking Trails

Programs that develop, maintain and make available to the public, facilities that are set aside and equipped for vacationing individuals and families who are camping. Also included are private camp sites that are available for rental to groups. Camp sites are usually located in the mountains, forests, deserts or other recreational areas and vary greatly in the amenities that are available which may include water, showers, toilets, electrical hookups, picnic areas, firepits and/or a variety of indoor and outdoor recreational facilities.

Campgrounds

Programs that develop, maintain and make available to the public, swimming pools which may be equipped with diving boards of various heights, slides and other equipment.

Swimming Facilities

Programs that acquire, develop and maintain beach property for use by the public and provide recreational, parking and sanitary facilities including volleyball courts, playground equipment, bicycle paths, fire rings, barbecues, picnic tables, showers, restrooms, trash containers, parking lots, access ways and other amenities. Most public beaches provide lifeguards, at least seasonally; and support a variety of activities including sunbathing, swimming, board surfing, body surfing, windsurfing, diving, tide pool exploring, fishing and volleyball. Private vendors may operate concessions and rent surf boards, boogie boards, kayaks, bicycles, inline skates, chairs, umbrellas and other recreational equipment.

Beaches

Programs that develop, maintain and make available to the public, ramps that can be used to launch boats into a body of water such as a lake or a river.

Boat Launching Sites

Open spaces within town, city, county or regional boundaries that are acquired, developed and maintained by local or regional governments and made available to the public as venues for recreational and leisure programs.

City/County Parks

Programs that develop, maintain and make available to the public, recreational areas which contain ponds, lakes or other bodies of water where swimming, fishing or boating may be permitted or which may feature fish or water fowl that the public can view and feed.

Lakes and Ponds

Programs have a wide variety of themes, including arts & crafts, cheerleading, dance, educational movies, farm animal care, fitness activities, hiking, martial arts, music, nature and wildlife exploration, parkour, pottery, rock climbing, safety classes, swimming, sports, theatre and zip lining.

Youth Programs offered at Bellevue Parks & Community Services

Offers a variety of programs for youth including sports, dance, music and arts and crafts.

Programs that instruct the public in the appropriate techniques for prolonging the lives of victims of heart failure until emergency medical care can be provided. Included may be instruction in full CPR which combines rescue breaths with chest compressions (the best option in some emergencies, including those involving infants and children, drowning victims or people who collapse due to breathing problems) and/or hands only CPR which involves chest compressions only, no mouth to mouth contact. Hands only CPR is used in emergencies where someone suffers sudden cardiac arrest.

CPR Instruction

Programs that offer a wide variety of activities including arts and crafts, academic programs, sports, reading clubs, workshops and other recreational, leisure, cultural, social and civic activities for school-age children and youth in out-of-school hours. The objective of youth enrichment programs is to promote healthy social interaction and help participants maximize their social, emotional, physical and academic potential.

Youth Enrichment Programs

Multipurpose centers that serve as a focal point for youth in the community and which offer, at a single location, a wide variety of services and activities that are needed by and of interest to this population.

Youth Centers

Centers, often operated by the local community department of parks and recreation, that offer, at a single location, a variety of recreational facilities such as athletic fields and courts, a gymnasium, a swimming pool and locker facilities. Recreation centers usually offer an organized program of activities for community residents of all ages and provide all necessary equipment.

Recreation Centers

Programs that provide opportunities for people of all ages to learn, become competitive in and enjoy the organized recreational activity, sport or game of their choice. These programs may be offered by local clubs devoted to a particular activity or sport; may provide individual or team coaching assistance or instruction, access to equipment and facilities, and uniforms, if necessary; and may sponsor or make arrangements for athletes to participate in amateur competitions, usually at the local, regional or state level, and provide officials for games. These events are generally for the enjoyment of the athletes and are not at a high enough competitive level to be considered spectator sports.

Recreational Activities/Sports

Provides recreational opportunities for all community members through community events, classes, leagues, trails, parks, and other programs. Recreational Opportunities offered at Bellingham Parks Recreation Division

Provides recreational opportunities for all community members through community events, classes, leagues, trails, parks, and other programs.

Programs that develop, maintain and make available to the public, courses that are laid out for the game of golf with a series of nine or 18 holes each including a tee, a fairway, a green and often one or more natural or artificial hazards.

Golf Courses

Programs that provide classes, individual lessons or other opportunities for people who want to learn or perfect their skills and techniques in any of a variety of visual art forms or crafts.

Arts and Crafts Instruction

Programs that provide plots of land on which groups of people living in a neighborhood can grow fruits, vegetables, herbs and flowers. Community gardens provide access to fresh produce and plants; may be located in parks, schools, hospital grounds or other open areas; and may be nurtured communally and the bounty shared, have individual plots for personal use, or be dedicated to "urban agriculture" where produce is grown for a market. Some have raised beds that are accessible to people with disabilities. The gardens provide an opportunity for participants to savor the freshness, flavor and wholesomeness of home-grown produce; save money on their food bills; grow traditional foods not available in the supermarket; or simply get some exercise and enjoy the benefits of being outdoors. They also support a community's food security, contribute to the preservation of open space, strengthen community bonds, provide a sense of connection to the environment and offer opportunities for community education.

Community Gardening

Programs that provide classes or individual lessons for people who want to learn or perfect their skills, grace, rhythm, coordination and individual expression when executing or participating in any of a number of different dance forms.

Dance Instruction

Programs that provide classes or individual instruction for people who want to learn or perfect their skills in another language. Included are programs that offer instruction in languages other than English (often referred to as foreign languages), indigenous languages (languages of the peoples native to North America), heritage languages (languages to which an individual has a cultural connection) which may also be indigenous or foreign languages depending on the community context, and languages that are at risk for extinction and need to be preserved to pass them along to future generations.
