International Programs offered at Whatcom Community College

Programs, usually within the formal education system at elementary, secondary and post-secondary levels, that provide information and guidance on an individual or group basis for students, including students with disabilities, who are experiencing personal, interpersonal or family problems such as substance abuse, loss of a family member or friend, divorce of a parent, personal and sexual relationships issues, dealing with bullies; or problems that arise as a part of school or university life such as test-taking anxiety, fear of oral examinations or participating in classroom discussions, tension or inexpressiveness in difficult interviews or procrastination in studying.

Programs that provide advice and guidance regarding academic and personal matters for students who are citizens of other countries.

International Student Advisement

An international curriculum at primary, middle and, most commonly, secondary school levels that enables students who complete the entire course of study to earn an IB diploma which meets university entrance qualifications throughout the world. The IB Diploma Program is used to set students at an international standard level; and many colleges recognize participation in (and the passing of) IB examinations as college credits. The program is offered in public and private institutions in more than 130 countries.

International Programs Office can help students with class placements, ESL enrollment, and transfer information.  The office is responsible for orientation programs, housing information, field trips, and American students considering study abroad.

Programs that offer opportunities for non-English-speaking and limited-English-speaking adults to learn listening, speaking, reading and writing skills with an emphasis on developing the level of communication competence that is essential for adults who are living in a setting in which English is the primary language. Also included are programs that provide English language instruction for younger people.

English as a Second Language

Public postsecondary educational institutions, commonly organized into two-year programs, which offer instruction that has been adapted in content, level and schedule to meet the needs of the community in which they are located. Community colleges (also known as junior colleges) generally offer a comprehensive curriculum which includes basic liberal arts and sciences with transfer, occupational, general education and adult education components. The program awards an Associates in Arts (A.A.) certificate to those who successfully complete the requirements.

Community Colleges

Programs that develop, implement, promote and/or manage exchange programs in which high school students, undergraduate and graduate students, university and college faculty or other educational personnel from the United States study, teach or engage in other educational activities abroad while foreign scholars and educators from those countries come to the U.S. Also included are programs that arrange short-term study and observation visits by foreign leaders and professionals who meet and consult with Americans who are active in their fields.

Educational Exchange Programs

Programs that provide assistance for students who want to attend a college or university in another country and need information about their alternatives, help with their applications and/or other forms of assistance.
