Provides protections for military service members who are unable to meet certain financial obligations due to deployment. Includes caps on interest rates, rights to terminate residential or automobile leases, and protections against repossession.
Enforces the Servicemembers Civil Relief Act, which provides protections for military service members who are active in federal service and who are unable to meet certain financial obligations due to deployment.
The act postpones or suspends certain civil obligations so that active duty members of the Armed Forces can focus their full attention on their military responsibilities without adverse consequences for them or their families:
- Interest rates on most preexisting loans or obligations capped at 6% per year
- Not required to pay early termination charges on some automobile leases
- Not required to pay early termination charges on some cell phone contracts
- Termination of a residential lease without penalty.
- Protection from eviction or foreclosure without a court order
Also protects against retaliation for asserting a service member's rights under the act.
