Programs that provide money or vouchers to purchase gasoline, most frequently for individuals who need their automobile for necessary local or out-of-town travel but cannot afford to run their vehicle without assistance, but occasionally for people driving through the local area who have become stranded.

Gas Money

Programs that provide financial assistance to help people pay fees associated with registering a motor vehicle with the proper authorities or ongoing motor vehicle licensing fees. Payment assistance can be in the form of a voucher or a rebate.

Motor Vehicle Registration Fee Payment Assistance

Programs that pay for or provide maintenance and repair services for people whose automobiles, trucks, trailers or other motorized vehicles are due for regular maintenance or have mechanical or structural problems. Also included are work experience programs that provide automobile repairs for the general public.

Automotive Repair and Maintenance

Programs that make rental payments for people who are at risk of eviction without assistance. Also included are rent supplement programs that provide assistance with ongoing monthly rental costs. Rent payment assistance programs may have age, income, disability, need or other eligibility requirements.

Programs that make car insurance payments for individuals who are at risk of losing their automobile insurance without assistance. These programs may have age, income, disability, need or other eligibility requirements.

Programs that provide financial assistance to purchase necessary prescription drugs for people who would be in an emergency situation without assistance. Also included are programs that reimburse individuals for their prescription expenses, usually on an annual basis. Prescription expense assistance programs may have age, income, disability, need or other eligibility requirements.

Programs that pay all or a portion of the electric service expenses of people whose electricity has been or is at risk of being shut off including any reconnection fees that may apply. Also included are non-emergency programs like those funded through the federal Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP), also referred to as LIEAP or HEAP in some states, that provide home energy assistance, generally in the form of a credit, for low-income households that apply. The assistance is usually available once per calendar year (or heating season). Electric service payment assistance programs may have age, income, disability, need or other eligibility requirements.

Programs that provide cash or tokens for individuals who have no personal means of transportation and are unable to use public transportation (or a taxi service) for necessary local travel without assistance with the fare. Programs that provide information for individuals whose illegally parked cars or other vehicles have been towed regarding the address of the police garage or other location where their cars are being stored and the amount of the fines they will need to pay in order to retrieve them. Also included are programs that provide information about vehicles that have been confiscated or stolen and recovered by the police; the police garages which, in addition to storing impounded vehicles, release vehicles and their contents to their owners once applicable fines have been paid or other conditions met; and the offices of officials who conduct hearings at the request of individuals who believe that their vehicle should not have been impounded to determine whether there was probable cause to impound the vehicle.
