Driver License Fee Payment Assistance

Programs that pay all or a portion of the gas service expenses of people whose gas has been or is at risk of being shut off including any reconnection fees that may apply. Also included are non-emergency programs like those funded through the federal Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP), also referred to as LIEAP or HEAP in some states, that provide home energy assistance, generally in the form of a credit, for low-income households that apply. The assistance is usually available once per calendar year (or heating season). Gas service payment assistance programs may have age, income, disability, need or other eligibility requirements.

Included are programs that provide assistance with combined water/sewer bills in communities where sewer payments are bundled with payments for water services. Programs that provide financial assistance to help people pay fees associated with registering a motor vehicle with the proper authorities or ongoing motor vehicle licensing fees. Payment assistance can be in the form of a voucher or a rebate.

Programs that provide money or vouchers to purchase gasoline, most frequently for individuals who need their automobile for necessary local or out-of-town travel but cannot afford to run their vehicle without assistance, but occasionally for people driving through the local area who have become stranded.

Also included are programs that provide bus fare for people who need to travel out of town (e.g., for a funeral) but do not have the means to do so.

Programs that provide information for individuals whose illegally parked cars or other vehicles have been towed regarding the address of the police garage or other location where their cars are being stored and the amount of the fines they will need to pay in order to retrieve them. Also included are programs that provide information about vehicles that have been confiscated or stolen and recovered by the police; the police garages which, in addition to storing impounded vehicles, release vehicles and their contents to their owners once applicable fines have been paid or other conditions met; and the offices of officials who conduct hearings at the request of individuals who believe that their vehicle should not have been impounded to determine whether there was probable cause to impound the vehicle.
