Volunteer Tutor Program offered at Tacoma Area Literacy Council
Agency assists adults in acquiring necessary basic skills in listening, speaking, reading and writing English to accomplish their goals and self-sufficiency. Provides training for volunteers who want to help other adults read and write (no previous teaching experience necessary). Provides training to tutor ESL (English as a Second Language). Tutor training workshops are twice a year, in the Spring and Fall.

Application process
Applicants must call to register for training or fill out the tutor registration form via the web site. Adults who need help with reading can reach TALC by phone or email.
Fee
For the tutor training workshop, a $50 donation is requested to help defray the cost of training materials. The fee also includes a one-year membership in the literacy council, and a 6 month membership to the national council. Financial assistance is available based on need. One-on-one tutoring is free to students, but they are expected to pay for their books at half cost.
Eligibility
Volunteer tutors must be at least 18 years old and must have a regular high school or GED diploma. They are asked to commit to tutoring an adult student for a minimum of 6 months.

The Tacoma Area Literacy Council provides free and confidential one-on-one instruction to adults in reading, writing, speaking, and comprehending English and promotes public awareness of adult literacy needs throughout Pierce County. Small classes are also offered at 3-4 locations around the county.
