Provides assistance for contractors or citizens who need to determine the existence of underground pipes or conduits in an area they plan to dig more than 12 inches into the ground. Washington State law (RCW Title 19, Chapter 144) states that prior to excavation, all utility companies must be notified. The call center will coordinate this process. Trained phone workers will notify member utility companies to enable representatives to inspect the site and mark the location of underground utilities for excavators. Digging equipment includes shovels, post hole diggers, fence post drivers or heavy equipment. Complaints about an incorrect or incomplete underground utility locate can be made to the Washington Utilities and Transportation Commission, if it has been within two business days of the initial call.
