Open Shop Program/DIY Bike Shop offered at Second Cycle Community Bike Shop

Provides a community work space, bicycle maintenance classes, literature, youth bike programming, and repair services. Also sells new and used bicycle components. Hosts a community space where people can maintain/repair their bicycles. There are options for people to just use tools, receive minimal assistance from staff, or learn how to do the maintenance/repair from staff. Helps people keep biking to where they need to go, whether that be to their job, to social services, to meet a cycling goal, or to strengthen their self reliance and mechanical ability. Assists approximately 175 community members a week during open shop hours, and performs in-kind services to the public.

Application process

Visit during open hours. Operates on a first come, first served basis. Access will depend on the capacity of staff. If there is more demand than staff/resource capacity, then service may be denied at that time. A letter or call from a case worker can help in prioritizing resources.

Fee

General Fees: - $5-$10/hour for access to tools, with no staff assistance for maintenance/repairs - $5-$15/hour for access to tools, with occasional mechanical assistance from staff - $25-$35/hour for access to the tools, with one-on-one, hand-on assistance from staff. Self declared low income, people experiencing homelessness, and youth under eighteen have access to the shop's resources at a reduced rate or no cost. May also have work/trade opportunities available, but they do ask that people contribute if they can. Talk with staff to see what option is best for the situation.

Eligibility

People who are riding bikes for transportation. Generally serves those in the Hilltop and surrounding area.

Second Cycle is a community cycle center that supports, educates, and advocates for cyclists, new and experienced, in the Hilltop and surrounding Tacoma community. Provides community work space, bicycle maintenance classes, literature, youth bike programming, and repair services, as well as new and used bicycle components. Maintains accessibility by providing affordable pricing, and we hope that others, like us, feel empowered by learning how to fix and maintain their personal cycle.
