Funeral Financial Assistance Fund offered by People's Memorial Association

As of March 2024, the Funeral Financial Assistance Fund was temporarily closed while People's Memorial Association seeks additional funding. People's Memorial Association seeks to help families in need pay for funeral arrangements (cremation, burial, etc). Applicants should submit an application found on the People's Memorial website to [email protected] Approval is based primarily on financial need and if the deceased will be cared for by one of the funeral homes contracted with People's Memorial Association. If the application is approved, the Responsible Party agrees to pay: - 25% of the disposition costs directly to the funeral home - 100% of any viewings, witnessed services, or memorial events planned in addition to the disposition of the body. (The fund only assists with essential services such as a direct cremation, direct burial, or direct alkaline hydrolysis) - Any related taxes and fees directly to the funeral home - $25 per certified copy of the death certificate directly to the funeral home If the application is approved, PMA agrees to pay: - Up to 75% of the cost of a direct cremation or direct alkaline hydrolysis (aka water cremation or aquamation) - Up to 50% of the cost of a direct burial, not including any services or viewings ordered by the family in addition to the disposition PMA will pay the funeral home directly once a statement of goods and services is submitted by the funeral home to PMA. PMA will not pay the family directly.

Eligibility

Decedent and family overseeing the final arrangements must be able to demonstrate financial need (<80% AMI as outlined on the People's Memorial website. A professional who is familiar with the family’s situation must submit a letter stating their relationship to the family or decedent and affirming they believe the decedent nor their next of kin have sufficient financial resources to pay for simple cremation without putting at risk the basic necessities of food and shelter. A professional in this situation would be defined as a healthcare provider, social worker, religious leader, landlord, guardian, or other person who is not related to the decedent and has had sufficient dealings with the family or decedent to be familiar with their situation.
