The Chief Executive Officer of Seattle is responsible for enforcing laws and city contracts and maintaining peace and order in the city. Mayor serves a four-year, non-partisan term of office and directs and controls all officers of the city, except those elected or appointed independently, and their staff.  Prepares and administers the city budget and presents recommendations for the upcoming year to the City Council. The mayor may veto ordinances passed by the City Council; the council can override vetoes with a two-thirds vote of all members.  The mayor appoints and may remove the heads of city administrative departments as well as office heads within the Executive Department.
