Municipal court is a court of limited jurisdiction. Municipal court judge is authorized by Washington state statute to preside over criminal misdemeanors, gross misdemeanors, traffic infractions and other city of Renton code violations. Also handles vehicle impounds. The municipal court does not do the following: - Small claims cases - Civil cases - Change-of-name cases - Issue marriage licenses

Fee
Payment for infractions may be made with cash, check, credit card or money order. Fines must be paid within 15 days of issuance to avoid a late fee. Failure to comply with a payment agreement will result in a $52 penalty added to the fine, and the unpaid balance will be sent to a collection agency. In general, misdemeanors are punishable by up to 90 days in jail and a fine up to $1,000. Gross misdemeanors require up to a year in jail. A fine for a gross misdemeanor cannot exceed $5,000.
