Academic Support Offered at Rainier Scholars
A comprehensive 12-year program that cultivates the academic and leadership potential of motivated students from 5th grade through college graduation. Academic Enrichment Phase (AEP) (5th grade) – An intensive 14-month experience in a supportive cohort environment, designed to prepare students for placement on college preparatory pathways in public and private schools. Scholars build and strengthen foundational academic skills, cultural identity and resiliency over the course of two summer sessions and on Wednesday afternoons and Saturdays during the school year. Academic Counseling (6th grade -college graduation) -Our academic counselors visit each scholar at their schools and college campuses. We offer social and cultural activities, weekly tutoring, skill-building workshops and annual retreats, all designed to build increased skills for academic success. Families are supported through parent workshops and individual meetings, as well as regular contact with academic counselors. College Counseling – We help scholars and families navigate the college application process and maintain strong relationships with college counselors at our partner schools and college admissions officers. Our scholars receive customized intensive college counseling, ACT/SAT prep activities and in-depth financial aid/college planning services. Leadership and Career Development (6th grade – college graduation) – We develop potential and create access to leadership and career opportunities. Middle school students participate in workshops that foster skill-building, leadership development and cultural identity and resiliency, as well as field trips focused on career exploration and summer enrichment opportunities. High school students participate in leadership development retreats and workshops, focused on important civic and societal issues. High school and college scholars receive summer internship opportunities, personalized career counseling, opportunities for career exploration and professional mentorship. Alumni Services – We support young graduates through professional development, networking and mentoring, community engagement activities and leadership opportunities, as well as building support for our organization from our alumni base.

Application process
Families interested in applying to Rainier Scholars must attend a Family Information Meeting (available en español), held November – January each year. During these meetings, our Recruitment team explains the program, the highly competitive admission process, answers questions and provides the application form. Applicants must currently be in 4th grade. Teachers and community members may nominate promising students. For more information, please refer to the online nomination form.
Fee
There is no fee to participate in Rainier Scholars. Scholars who are admitted to our program will be charged a transportation fee during the two summers of the Academic Enrichment phase only. This fee ranges from $25 to $600, depending on family income.
Eligibility
Our challenging 12-year program opens doors of opportunity and a path to college graduation for hard-working students of color who are underrepresented on college campuses. Over 90% of scholars come from households where they would be the first to attend college. Approximately 90% of our families are low-to-moderate income.
