Criminal Court offered by King County District Court at Vashon at South Division

Has jurisdiction over misdemeanors, gross misdemeanors and criminal traffic violations for which the maximum fine is $5,000 and/or 364 days in jail.  Preliminary hearings for felony cases are also within the jurisdiction of the court.  Examples of misdemeanors are disorderly conduct, shoplifting and prostitution.  Gross misdemeanors include theft of property or services valued up to $250, driving under the influence (DUI) of alcohol or other drugs, and hit-and-run.  The trial in a criminal action may be heard before either a judge or a jury.

Criminal action is initiated when: -  A complaint is filed by the prosecuting attorney -  A citizen's complaint is filed -  A law enforcement officer files a citation and Notice to Appear in court

Criminal case is filed in the division that has jurisdiction over where the offense occurred, or if it is a traffic or criminal action, where the infraction occurred.  Criminal actions are limited to misdemeanors or gross misdemeanors.
